owner of By the Bay Botanicals, LLC
I wear many hats as an entrepreneur and business owner, but adding to that I am a podcaster, chandler (candle maker), wife, marketing junkie, blogger, Caviler King Charles Spaniel and Schnauzer lover, and am known to come up with great out of the box ideas when it comes to business growth and marketing.
Education: I graduated from Arundel Senior High - 1995 and earned an Associates degree in Fine Art at Anne Arundel Community College - 1998. I also attended Towson University for Fine Art from 2002-2004.
Background Story: I was bitten by the entrepreneur bug when I entered 6th grade after learning how to make very detailed Christmas themed pinecone wreaths from scratch from an artist in Pennsylvania. I made about 5 a year for my teachers and neighbors to earn money for Christmas presents for family and friends. From the age of 15, I worked at the Maryland Renaissance Festival from 1991-2002 as a ticket seller, worked in the office, ran my own food booth, and in games. I received rewards for cash handling and accuracy and proudly wear the badge of youngest food booth owner at the fair as well as having the cleanliest booth according to health code enforcement when I worked there.
Career: I enjoyed a 3 year career at Borders Books and music as a barista, working my way up to Assistant Manager while attending Anne Arundel Community College. After college I worked as an administrative assistant and substitute teacher before becoming a lead clerk at Starbucks. At Starbucks, I had the privilege of being a rotating lead clerk at several Starbucks cafes in the district due to my leadership skills and ability to motivate staff. Though working at Starbucks was a great experience, in 2003 I decided to turn back to my entrepreneur roots making and selling canned fruits and veggies, based off my great grandmother's - Grammy recipes. The business of Grammy's Preserves was born and I quit my day job at Starbucks.
Entrepreneurial Experience: This venture evolved into Grammy's Country Collectibles where the focus was less on food, but more on the botanicals side when my husband Mark and I moved into a 1930's farmhouse with access to lots of herbs and botanical flowers. A year later, the company By the Bay Botanicals formed in 2007 where I taught myself how to make floral potpourris made from dried flowers and herbs as well as lavender products and room sprays all sold in various art and craft festivals across Maryland. In 2009, I began experimenting with candles after a mentor and business owner was hoping to offer better burning, locally made candles for her customers. After experimenting with multiple candle kits, reading books on candle making and beyond, a unique type of candle emerged using sustainable ingredients, true to life aromas that are all inspired and named after popular travel destinations. These candles burn clean - without soot, burn all the way to the edge of a unique bell shaped jar, and are stunning with a frost like appearance. In other words,. re-invented the candle and that is how the candle line, Destination Scentsations, was born. In June of 2014 I opened my first gift shop where today my business offers wholesale and retail business, selling online via the company's e-commerce website (www.bythebaybotanicals.com) and also specializing in custom/private labeled candles ideal for weddings, events, and business to business corporate gifts. With roots that come from nearly 15 years of marketing and merchandising my products at art and craft fairs, 20 + years in retail and management experience, winning the Carroll Biz Challenge award for Best Downtown Business for her By the Bay Botanicals Candle and Gift shop location, plus tips and tricks I have picked up along the way, I have a lot of experience and knowledge that I cannot wait to share with other like minded individuals.
